You can contact the University at any time throughout the semester to arrange a posting.  Students can be available at all times.  There is no matching/ranking process…all opportunities should be handled through the RecruitGuelph website.

Conestoga College

No Deadline!
Conestoga College facilitates recruitment on an ongoing basis – postings are accepted beginning three months before the start of a term and are accepted until all students are placed (provided students can meet the minimum 10 weeks, or 360 hours required for the work placement).

Work Term Schedule

  • Fall 2011: Sept 6 to December 23 inclusive
  • Winter 2012:  January 3 to April 27 inclusive
  • Spring 2012: May 1 to August 31 inclusive

Actual start and end dates are negotiated between the employer and the student.

Students are available for the work terms listed above based on academic program.  Not all students are available for all work terms.  For specific availability, please see our Employer Guide or contact the Conestoga Co-op office.

Your obligations:

  • provide challenging, rewarding learning through work.
  • participate in a mid-term review of performance.
  • evaluate the student's performance at the conclusion.
  • review the student's Work Report .
  • remunerate the student.

How to Select a Student
Conestoga’s online recruitment system called MyCareer is an easy way to manage your co-op recruitment.

  • Target students from specific programs and clusters of programs
  • Monitor the number of students who have viewed your job posting at any time
  • Retrieve co-op applications, and schedule interviews – all online
  • Easily re-post an opportunity without having to re-enter information

The employer provides a description of the position including duties and qualifications, reviews applications, selects interview candidates, performs interviews and selects desired student.  Interviews can be held at the College or on the employer’s site.

College staff will facilitate the hiring process including scheduling interviews and presenting job offers.

It is the employer’s responsibility to:

  • Provide a career-related work experience, with duties and responsibilities related to the objectives of the program of study
  • Provide orientation, training and on-going supervision
  • Assign progressive responsibility and/or exposure to new challenges during multiple work terms
  • Employ the student for no less than the minimum number of hours required per work term

Is the student required to complete a project?
No.

  • Work Term Agreement Form (prior to start of work term)
  • Final Performance Evaluation Form

Secondary School

Requirements
Provide a job ad including student experience required and job tasks for Employer Database

Employers will interview up to 4 students per available placement at the beginning of the secondary semesters (September and February)

Employers need to:

  • Designate an employee to supervise and evaluate student
  • Complete 2-3 student performance appraisals
  • Work with the co-op teacher to develop and evaluate the student’s learning plan
  • Employers provide workplace specific WHIMS awareness
  • Employers provide a rich learning opportunity for secondary students

Salary Survey Data

  • Every summer, U. of G. collects salary data for all Co-op students .

Financial Incentives:
There are various tax credits and grant processes to consider:
Ontario Tax Credit

  • valued up to $3,000 per 4-month term;

Scientific Research Experimental Research Tax Incentive

  • The SR&ED Tax Incentive covers many aspects of employment and research funding

Small Business Internship Program

Funds up to 75% of salaries for certain programs related to e-business strategies

Conestoga College

There is no cost to post job opportunities on Conestoga’s MyCareer.

Financial Incentives:

  • Co-operative Education Tax Credit (CETC):
    Receive up to $3,000 per student per work term by qualifying for the (CETC)
  • Apprenticeship and Journeyperson Incentives:
    Employers may be eligible for tax credits up to $7,000 per year per student.

Employer Financial Responsibility:
As part of the Work Term Agreement, employers are required to pay wages as negotiated with the student.

Establishing Wages:
Conestoga College collects data on hourly wages of co-operative education students and offers suggested wage ranges as a service to employers for the purpose of establishing fair wages.
Our experience has been that employers increase wages as skills increase, particularly when employing students for subsequent work terms (second, third and fourth).

Is WSIB or Workers Comp required
Yes.
Who is responsible for coverage in the workplace? Employer.

Secondary School

Remuneration is not required as students are earning credits towards their OSSD.

WSIB is covered by the Ministry of Education and all forms are completed and signed before the student begins the placement.

Secondary School

Secondary co-operative education is a planned learning experience under the supervision of a co-op teacher where students explore future career pathways and experience the realities of the workplace.
